The US government shutdown continues for its sixth consecutive week. This has left millions of government employees either working without pay or staying home due to leave. Not only has this affected the government but it has also distressed common citizens.
Flight cancellations are happening at airports, Food Assistance Programs are stalled, and “Closed” signs are posted around government offices.

Administrative Impasse: The Longest
“This appears to be the longest government shutdown in American history,” experts say. Not only are there issues pertaining to the administrative system in place, but there are further implications in terms of the democratic system.
Members of the Senate are holding negotiations. But there are no indications yet if a practical solution has been met. The Democrats are insisting that the budget measure needs to pass first. Meanwhile, the Trump government sets health-related topics and border security to negotiate.
This standoff has already begun to adversely affect the American economy. The federal government’s loans to small businesses are halted, our museums are closed, and contractors are struggling financially.

Trump’s Message: “We Need Reform, Not Compromise”
The American leader made his position very clear on his public platform, Twitter. He criticized “Obamacare,” which he calls “the weakest healthcare system in the world.” He believes that money should go directly to the people so that they can purchase health insurance according to their wish.
The Democrats did not agree with this proposal since it would favor insurance firms. As a result, treatment costs would further go up for those who are poor.
Also Contending with House Procedure: Trump’s Demand for an End to the Filibuster
During the shutdown period, Trump has also demanded that the filibuster rule be abolished. Under the existing filibuster rule, for passage of bills, 60 votes are required.
Although if this rule was scrapped, Republicans could easily pass a majority vote legislation that would sideline Democrats. Such an approach could be viewed as a drastic departure in American parliamentary history.
Will American Democracy Face a Crisis of Trust?
This longstanding state of affairs is laying bare not only economic but institutional imbalances. Whether or not the deadlock between members of the Senate will continue or whether American citizens will continue to pay for that deadlock remains to be seen.
