Delhi Government’s big move! Free LPG gas connections for slum families announced
The government headed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made a historical announcement for slum-dwelling poor families living in the capital, Delhi. From now on, these families will directly receive free LPG gas connections. The move will benefit those who used to cook with wood, coal, or kerosene.
Slum Survey to Begin Soon
The Chief Minister has asked the officials of the Delhi Shelter Board (DUSIB) to survey slum areas in the entire city. The aim of the government is to ensure that every poor family gets access to this benefit and to note those who are yet to get benefits under Ujjwala Yojana. Based on the survey exercise, those who are eligible will get crucial items like free LPG cylinders, gas stoves, and pipes so that nobody faces inconvenience.
Clean Fuel Reduces Pollution
Now, this government project will help alleviate the poor’s exposure to smoke emanating from burning wood and coal. Not only does the smoke emanate from these materials, polluting family members’ environment, but its aftermaths result in contaminated air in the entire DelhI. In fact, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made it abundantly clear that using cooking gas was advantageous to family members if health was considered.
Ujjwala Yojana Scheme has transformed lives of millions
Hundreds of poor families across India have managed to get free gas connections under the “Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.” The project was initiated by the Indian central government in 2016. The project was initiated to ensure that poor communities are not held back or deprived due to traditional sources of energy. The government of Delhi believes that increased gas use in slum areas will promote improved health conditions for its population. The move will prove to be a huge contribution to “Clean Delhi, Healthy Delhi.”
Important Aspects to Consider
The main beneficiaries of the project will be poor families who are until now using wood, coal, or kerosene for cooking. Based on a survey, free LPG connections, cooking stoves, and pipes will be directly provided to all identified families. The health of women and children and environment are the top areas of concern for the government. Hopefully, this project will give new hope to poor people in Delhi so that they can soon benefit from clean kitchens.
