‘We can’t breathe!’ Citizens protest against deadly Delhi air pollution

The air in Delhi has become toxic these days. In fact, in quite a few areas, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has gone above 400, which obviously falls in the “Severe” category. As a result, people are facing difficulty in breathing. Also, there are serious health hazards because of these toxic emissions.

Protest against Pollution at India Gate

Large numbers of people marched through the streets of the capital on Sunday evening to demand clean air from the government. The crowds headed to India Gate. There was representation there too. People from other political parties like AAP and Congress had arrived. They felt that the time had come to design effective policies for clean air in Delhi.

Police cut off protest at India Gate

The Delhi Police stopped protesters from reaching India Gate. As per police authorities, India Gate was not an appropriate place for protesting in line with a Supreme Court directive. In fact, demonstrations are only allowed in one place in India’s capital. A lot of people demonstrated against this directive. As a result, some protesters were detained.

Allegation made by people: The Government is only Playing

“The condition of our capital’s air quality has become dangerous,” said a citizen of Delhi. “People are not getting relief or approval to express an opinion. The government is hiding its true data related to air quality and doing only cosmetic jobs like water sprinkling or artificial rain sessions, which are proving to be useless,” said the citizen.

“Why does the data disappear?” – a question raised by an AAP leader

The Delhi head of AAP, Saurabh Bhardwaj, was also part of the protest. He explained that never before in Delhi has “the intelligentsia come onto the streets to such an extent. Clearly, people are disillusioned with the government.” Bhardwaj made grave charges against the central government. He said that “Whenever there’s a sharp increase in pollution levels, ‘air quality data’ gets ‘hidden.’ Sometimes, data collection at AQI centers gets suspended when there’s maximum air quality.”

Increasing Pollution—Declining Health

As per official statistics, there’s been an increase in average AQI values in Delhi from 322 to 390 between November 1 and 8. It’s clear that there’s no improvement in air conditions. The truth is that coming out of homes has become a problem.

Now there needs to be concrete action. The effects of pollution in public life in Delhi are evident. Citizens want to breathe clean air. However, there is growing pressure on the government to come up with a solution. One thing was clear concerning the protesters. They need a solution to ensure that future generations are not breathing in toxic materials.
